Herman and Roberta Carlstrom played a tremendous role in the lives of students for a combined 50+ years. They worked in several towns in the state of Maine, spending the majority of their careers in Jay.
Roberta taught 2nd grade at Jay Elementary School where she retired in 1995. After retiring she continued to substitute teach as well as volunteer for numerous literacy programs, library programs, and tutored GED students.
Herman Carlstrom was Guidance Counselor for Jay Middle School, retiring in 1993. He taught History earlier in his career, and continued this passion by supporting both the Jay and Stockholm, ME Historical Societies. He also shared his love of photography by teaching students basic skills of photography in the middle school enrichment program.
Their philosophy on education was progressive, unafraid to try new things and challenge tradition.
This fund is established in memory of their lives and contributions to education.
